The big crocodile in Normanton, Queensland
Does SIZE matter?
To the people that built the structures pictured on this page it certainly does!
Big bananas, big pineapples, big crocodiles, big oranges, and even a big poo !
The BIG thing culture started in 1963 when Paul Kelly (not the singer) built the five metre high Big Scotsman, also known as Scotty, in Medindie, Adelaide, South Australia.
Since then big things have popped up all over Australia, although not everyone likes big things. The residents of Dunedoo in New South Wales protested against plans to build a big dunny and it never came to be.
This is only a small selection of all the BIG Things that can be found around Australia, if you come across any not listed on this page please send us a pic !

Tully is officially the wettest place in Australia, so gum boots come out pretty handy around here.

The Big Scotsman, Medindie, Adelaide, SA
The five metre high Big Scotsman, also known as Scotty, was erected in 1963 and is Australia's oldest BIG thing.
Located on the corner of Scotty's Motel in the inner-city suburb of Medindie, the Big Scotsman was designed by Paul Kelly, who later went on to build the Big Lobster.

The Big Wine Bottle, McLaren Vale, SA
This 10m high bottle of ‘Wirra Wirra Churchblock’ wine is cladded with recycled corks.
Find it at McLaren Vale Winery, Wirra Wirra, McLaren Vale, South Australia.
Wirra Wirra started phasing out corks ten years ago were wondering “Where have all the corks gone?”. People used to hoard them for the never completed cork board etc. A bit of Googling discovered some bizarre examples of cork art which got them thinking… They decided to create their own massive Work of Art – Wirra Wirra has a history of doing unusual things that don’t always fit the stereotype… So they put a call out for old corks and discovered that the Girl Guides collect and recycle them to raise funds, but this revenue has been hit by all the screwcaps. So what started as a quest to build something BIG, evolved into a bit of a cause-related awareness exercise for the Girl Guides who by chance are enjoying The Year of the Girl Guide in 2010! Wirra Wirra built thier baby, which is not a statement about corks, but a recognition of leaving them behind, the chance to create something interesting and to remind everyone that amid a lot of the gloom that surrounds the wine industry today, Wirra Wirra hasn’t lost site of their philosophy that “this should all be fun”.
