We love slime!! But when you have toddlers and preschoolers, safety is a priority. That’s why we created these edible slime recipes that you can make with simple ingredients found in the kitchen! Taste safe and worry free!

Why Edible Slime?

If you’ve seen the slime recipes circulating on social media, then you’ve likely noticed that many of them contain ingredients like glue and/or borax. While generally safe when supervised, they’re not the best idea for toddlers or young kids that still like to taste-test everything they play with.

As a mom of young kids, I decided to create SAFE edible slime for my girls to enjoy. Our first and most popular recipe (see below) was such a hit that we decided to try other ingredients too!

Slime is a wonderful sensory activity and very soothing for kids (and grown-ups too!) Our edible slime recipes are all simple (most are 2-3 ingredients) and made with safe, food-based ingredients that are easy to find. In fact, you might already have many of the items we used in your own kitchen.

So while we do love to make traditional slime recipes such as galaxy slime, with the younger kiddos its all about taste-safe recipes!

How Do You Make Edible Slime?

What I love about these kid friendly slime recipes is that they are easy enough that kids can actually make them! Yes, they might be a little bit messy, but they are food ingredients that usually clean up easily. (Unlike glue based slimes which could get stuck in carpet or be tough to clean up).

The first thing I would do is to create a workspace for kids. We love these play trays for keeping the slime contained while kids play.

We usually make our slime at the kitchen table, which has a tile floor beneath it. That way we can simply wipe up any spills if needed. You could also buy a cheap plastic tablecloth to put under the table too. Or make slime outside on a pretty day!

I recommend gathering all of your slime ingredients, a big mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons before you bring the kids over, so that way everything is all set for them to start mixing. I’d also print out the slime recipes so you have those handy instead of keeping a phone or computer on the table where it could get messy.

What Ingredients Do You Need to Make Edible Slime?

These are some of our favorite ingredients for making non glue slime and taste safe slime.

• corn starch (stock up on this ingredient!!)
• cocoa powder
• sugar free gelatin
• white frosting
• instant pudding
• rainbow sprinkles
• non-stick silicone mat (for easy clean-up)

Is Edible Slime Really Edible?

I think a better way to describe these recipes is “taste safe slime.” They’re technically edible, but aren’t intended to be eaten as a snack or meal.

The reason I started creating edible slime recipes in the first place was to allow my youngest daughter to join in the slime play, without worrying about her accidentally ingesting toxic ingredients.

If you’re worried about kids actually trying to eat the slime, don’t worry, most of them don’t actually taste that good. So if your kid sneaks a taste, they probably won’t try to eat more! But they also won’t get sick!
